In 2024, Spain’s publishing industry once again demonstrated remarkable growth. Domestic sales surpassed €3 billion for the first time since the global economic downturn, reaching €3.037 billion. This marks the eleventh consecutive year of expansion. On a nominal basis, revenue rose 6.3% from 2023, and after adjusting for inflation (2.8%), real growth remains solid at 3.4%. Over the past decade, cumulative nominal revenue growth has reached 39.2%, although real terms show a more modest gain of approximately 8.7%.
The surge in revenue was driven by a substantial uptick in unit sales, with a total of 194.5 million copies sold—an increase of 5.6% year-over-year. Remarkably, the average retail price of books held steady at €14.69, with publishers absorbing inflation rather than passing increased costs to consumers.
A standout performer was audiobooks, which enjoyed a stellar 40% increase in sales, translating to €165.5 million in revenue. Digital downloads also saw strong momentum—up 23.9% in units, with total sales climbing and an average price of €9.
Publishing output remained robust, with nearly 87,600 titles released in 2024—an increase across both print and digital formats. Digital titles grew by 8.7%, while print titles rose modestly.
Growth was broad-based across categories. Adult fiction led the way with a 14% increase, followed by children’s and young adult literature (+10.9%), non-fiction (+7%), and comics (+5%).
Traditional retail channels remain predominant. Bookstores—both independent and chains—account for over half of all sales, with independents growing more rapidly. Export markets also expanded modestly, reflecting Spain’s enduring cultural reach.
Overall, the Spanish publishing sector remains in robust health—propelled by sustained domestic demand, digital innovation, and strong category performance—continuing its impressive upward trajectory.
